Montreal: Then and Now

"I want to paint Montreal as a rather fantastic city, which it was, because nobody knows today what it was like. And I'm one of the last survivors, or rapidly becoming one."
- Christopher Plummer

The Chatelaine House at Expo 67.

Visitors to the Man in the Home exhibit on Ile Notre-Dame, close to the Expo-Express station, will have a chance to win both the home and its contents.

The three-level house is a new imaginative concept in family living, an outstanding design that was the prizewinner from over 130 entries in a Canada-wide competition sponsored by the Canadian Lumberman’s Association.

Conceived by Gustavo da Roza, architect and teacher of Winnipeg, for an average family in their late thirties with three children, it was built and furnished at Expo by Chatelaine magazine. The decorations and furnishings, like the home, are entirely Canadian in design and execution.

The ground floor is a complete hobby and work center, with living areas and kitchen on the second level.

On the third level, three bedrooms and two bathrooms make-up the sleeping quarters with a master-bedroom balcony that overlooks the living room.

Visitors will see the wine cellar, gardening center, sewing center, swimming pool and forever-green made-made lawn that you can vacuum, never cut or water. It is, in fact, the perfect home for modern living.”
